Raja Ampat’s name is rooted in local legend, passed down through generations. One well-known version tells of a couple from Wawiyai in Kabui Bay who discovered five mysterious eggs along the Waikeo River. They brought the eggs home in a woven bag (nokeng) and, as night fell, the eggs began to hatch. From within emerged four boys and one girl, each wearing fine garments that hinted at royal descent. The four boys became rulers of Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool—the “Four Kings”—while the fifth child is often said to be associated with other sacred places in the region. This story is part of the living heritage that gives the archipelago its identity.
